First Word
The long list of the problems encountered in finally producing these six pages would
sound too much like an exaggeration so we will suffice to say that no doubt it hasnt
been for the lack of trying!
Despite these problems we endeavour to bring out this newsletter as a monthly publication
as regularly as possible.
This first issue is dedicated to the introduction of the Association of Iranian
Researchers. We hope that from the next issue, by receiving your articles, questions
and valued suggestions we will add to the scholarly weight of this newsletter.
Please send your comments to any of the listed offices.

An Introduction to Association of Iranian Researchers
The Association of Iranian Researchers, ACI, would like to
begin its fifth year of activities by honouring and thanking all those who have helped and
supported it in the past.
Our aims and objectives remain dedicated, as always, to identifying, studying and
researching issues concerning the Iran of today; also forecasting and offering solutions
for its future on the threshold of the year 2000 and beyond. We are confident that, as
illustrated by our past gatherings and the high calibre of Iranian experts and
professionals employed internationally, this is a very achievable target.
ACI, in its effort to improve its productivity, has devised a new working
structure and related governing committees. Also, in an effort to unify international
studies on Iranian subjects, ACI is in the process of gathering and producing an
information library listing all research and studies carried out internationally by
universities, organisations and research institutes dating back ten years.
ACI, during the last three years of its activities has opened up two more
offices in Washington D.C. and London as well as the original office which was registered
in Paris in 1992.
ACI, also joined the London University as a corporate affiliate of the Centre of Near and
Middle Eastern Studies, SOAS in July 1996.
ACI, would like to invite all research institutes and organisations
active in researching Iranian issues - social, politics, economics or cultural - to join
forces in an effort to stop repetition and dissipated effort in this respect. This is done
with the hope that the debate and dialogue created by these organisations coming together
will produce a far deeper insight and accurate result.
ACI maintains an impartial and an unprejudiced approach to all its
activities and respects all schools of thought. We work actively with colleagues from all
over the world, and hope to contribute to the creation of a scholarly ideal of a community
brought together by common intellectual interests and the pursuits of knowledge.
And, finally we at ACI, are a group made up of many different schools of
thought and tendencies, brought together with the common objective of a prosperous future
for Iran as our motivation. To this end Iran needs its responsible children more than ever
before. We invite the help of all Iranians in realising these objectives.

In fond memory of Amir Hooshang Zonozi, vice president of Association of
Iranian Researchers
Amir Hooshang Zonozi, was born in Zonoz a province of East
Azarbeijan. Having lost his father in early childhood the story of his early years, a much
enjoyable and readable tale, was best told by him in a series of articles published in the
Paris based Roozegar Noe magazine.
Amir Hooshang Zonozi moved to Tehran in his teenage years where he to continue his studies
started work at a young age.
He completed his Masters degree at Tehran University in International Law. During the last
year of his studies he was employed by the Centre of Statistics of Iran and
after two years went to Japan to complete his studies.
Upon his return from Japan he travelled to India, England and USA for further specialising
and subsequently returned to Iran to continue his specialised research with the CSI. He
complemented this with lecturing and researching at several Universities.
During the last few years before the Revolution of 1979 he was promoted to the head of the
research for the population statistics. His last official post was as the adviser to the
CSI.
A number of his research work has been published but a large part remains unpublished.
Amongst the published work to name a few:
1. History of Marand - a geo-political
look at the history of Marand.
2. The Japanese Connection - result of his trip to Japan as a complete
guide to Japan.
3. The secret of the decent of thought and taste in my country - a
critical look at the the book The secrets of my land by Reza
Barahani.
This has gone into third publication.
4. Mouryaneh dar Ghalam - a critical look at
Mouryaneh by Bozourg Alavi.
5. Soltan Zanjir - a collection of poems of Azarbeijan in
turkish.
6. Publications under assumed names
Amir Hooshang Zonozi, spent the last thirteen years of his
life in London dedicated to research and writing. On July 31, 1997 the last day of his
life, as the result of blocked arteries which he was not aware of, sat on the steps of his
house to refresh his breath never to stand up again.
He was one of the founder members of ACI and by registering the London Office he assumed
the full responsibility of it. He will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace.
