IRAN IN THE 21ST CENTURY

The plans and role of the 'Opposition'

in the future of Iran

The Meaning and Understanding of "Opposition" and its Role

in The Today and Tomorrow's of Iran

The recent social trends in Iran creates the following questions concerning the existence and effectiveness of 'Opposition' both in and out of Iran in our minds:

  1. Does 'Opposition' really exist and what is its meaning?
  2. 'Opposition' in political culture stands for examination, disagreement, and confrontation. It refers to those who stand in opposition with the government and offer a different viewpoint. Today, do we accept this explanation of 'Opposition' or do we choose to change it according to our own taste and only sometimes use a pretend term?
  3. Given the above understanding, is there really an opposition that wants to and is able to systematically create a fundamental and logical platform for itself; and if so will it have an accepted place within the society?

I will base my discussion on the presence of an identifiable opposition both in and out of Iran. Also that the so called 'Jebhe Dovom Khordad' (23 May 1997 Front) has turned a blind eye to the real opposition to the Islamic Republic and has itself formed an opposition against the extremist faction. On the one hand, it must be applauded for the stance it has taken against them but on the other hand, it must be severely criticised for disregarding the real opposition to the Islamic Republic.

However, if we take an objective look at the recent changes in Iran it is the inefficiency and absence of true opposition that has produced the thought of substitution. Should the opposition in and out of Iran prove themselves capable of carrying out their duties with workable manifestos they will automatically assume their place and convert people's despair to hope.

Ultimately I believe that it is only with diligence and relentless work that one must plan for Iran's future. I strongly believe that the performance of the Islamic Republic in the last twenty-one years has in many ways led to the destruction of Iran and that with or without Khatami the Islamic Republic does not have a constructive future for Iran.

Consequently, I say that on the threshold of the twenty first century our efforts must concentrate on rescuing our society and country from the devouring vortex it has fallen into.

bullet

In the absence of a true alternative we must endeavour to create, strengthen and establish one.

bullet

An alternative based on the needs of today's Iran and its future, which is a fundamental, logical and free form excited and emotional slogans.

bullet

An alternative and secular substitute that whole-heartedly believes and is based upon the Human Rights Convention.

bullet

One that will insist on the separation of religion and state.

bullet

One that leaves the relationship between its individuals and God to themselves without the need of a go between.

bullet

One that is able to offer unequivocal, substantiated and workable plans.

bullet

One that proves itself resolute and uncompromising in their achievement.

bullet

Rest assured that our deprived nation and its freedom-seeking children will give it their stamp of approval.

Finally when forming and establishing this opposition and its aims we must remember that as Iranians we have to defend our Iranianness and national identity. Let us never forget that our national identity is neither religious nor religious-nationalistic. Our national identity is our Iranianness.
