We believe that the “Iranian Women’s
Movement” deserves international recognition as a worthy winner of the 2008 UN
Human Rights Prize because: -
-
Women have been
at the forefront of social change in
Iran over the last 100 years. The
achievement of many civil and political rights is a credit to women’s
unwavering struggle for equality in the face of grave danger and oppression,
particularly over the last 30 years;
-
of their
tireless and dedicated work using peaceful, creative and constructive methods
to overcome legal and institutional discrimination in the last thirty years;
-
the Iranian
women have successfully transformed their fight for equality and justice into
the wider movement for social justice and equality that has brought Iranian
women and men standing together shoulder to shoulder signalling a new era in
the struggle for human rights in Iran;
-
of women’s
continued courage and dedication, their fearless approach to changing culture
by breaking taboos and traditions, and standing up to the increasing use of
violence and persecution against them.
This international prize for ‘Iranian
Women’s Movement’ will offer much needed support and protection
to each and every NGO, volunteer organisations large and small and human
rights defenders at grassroots level throughout Iran. It will also recognise
the work of Iranian human rights activists dispersed throughout the globe in
support of work carried out in
Iran.
In a rare and brief phone conversation
in February 2008 a young detained female activist kept mostly in solitary
confinement since September 2007 pleaded,
‘DON’T FORGET ABOUT US’.
She remains in detention today.
By
honouring the ‘Iranian Women’s Movement’ with this award they will know
that
THEY ARE NOT FORGOTTEN.
