Mr Pat Cox, President

European Parliament

B?. Paul-Henri Spaak - 11B011

60, rue Wiertz / Wiertzstraat 60

Dear Mr Cox,

 Meeting with Islamic Republic's

Parliamentary Delegation

16-18 June 2003

According to news reports by the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) on 14 June, as a sign of improved relationship between the Islamic Republic and the European Union, Mr Elmar Brock has invited a Parliamentary delegation from the Islamic Republic to meet with members of the European Parliament in Brussels.

While expressing serious concern over the extended invitation and the fact that the meetings are still scheduled to take place despite the nationwide protests and sensitive situation in Iran ACI would like to remind the European Parliament that:

Respect for democracy and observance of human rights are among the fundamental principles on which the European Union was founded on. The Constitutions of its individual member states also rely on these principles.

Based on news reports from numerous trustworthy sources, the people's on going protest has shown a hatred for the rulers of the regime and has called for their overthrow. This confirms the awareness with which the Iranian nation is looking to take charge of its future. They have realised that neither Khatami and the reformist faction nor Khamenei and his extremist followers have the answers to their demands, that in fact they are one and the same and that from the beginning Khatami has been the keeper of this oppressive regime.

The experiences of the last few years, in particular during the Khatami era since 1997, have proved that in spite of all the efforts and the total support of the European Union and the various 'critical dialogue policies' neither of the ruling factions has been able to produce a cohesive plan for the present and future problems strangulating Iran. On a daily basis since September 1997, we have witnessed a cultural crisis and the dangerous escalation of social, political, and economic problems. Through open letters and as the result of in-depth analysis and understanding ACI has been warning the world community of an impending political explosion as far back as 1998.

Sir, with all due respect, although it is evident and fully understandable that the European Union would wish to pursue its own financial interests may I remind you that in the increasingly interdependent world ultimately the problems burning Iran would affect the global community. The will of the Iranian nation for a better future must be respected and supported for ultimately it is the Iranian nation that will decide its own future.

ACI hopes that the brief points above act as a reminder to the EU for the observance of rights in the Iran of today and the future of the relations with the 'Iran of the future'.

Respectfully Yours

Hossein Ladjevardi

President, ACI
